What is Nasal Obstruction?
Nasal congestion is a state of inability to breathe easily through the nose. There are many causes of nasal congestion. Anatomical disorders of structures such as bone and cartilage in the nose, sinusitis and allergic rhinitis are the main causes of nasal congestion.
Nasal curvature or nasal septal deviation is one of the most common causes of nasal obstruction due to structural disorder. Flu infections such as colds and flu, sinusitis and hay fever are also common causes of nasal congestion.
What are the Causes of Nasal Obstruction?
The most common cause of nasal obstruction is nasal bone curvature (septal deviation), nasal flesh swelling (concha swelling), various types of rhinitis called flu, sinusitis, allergic conditions, polyps, snoring-apnea syndrome and tumors.
In the septum deviation, also known as bone curvature among the people, the bone and cartilage structure forming the middle part of the nasal cavity is inclined to one side. This may require correction of the curvature through an operation through the nose.
What are the complaints of patients with nasal obstruction?
As the nose is clogged, the person breathes continuously in the mouth
Frequent throat infections and pharyngitis
Snoring and sleep disorders
Dry mouth in the morning
Sexual dysfunction
Nose speech
Children wetting bottom at night
Distress in physical movements such as walking, climbing stairs
Nasal Congestion Treatment
In the treatment of nasal obstruction the underlying cause should be eliminated. If the cause is bone curvature in the middle part of the nose and growth in the side wall of the nose, this should be eliminated by surgery.
However, if there is a nasal congestion related to a swelling of the nasal flesh called the concha, such as a rhinitis and allergic rhinitis, medication should be administered by an otolaryngologist.
