What is Tonsillectomy?
Tonsil surgery or tonsillectomy is the procedure of removing the tonsils by surgery. Tonsils are organs on the back of the tongue and on both sides of the throat. Tonsils contribute to the body’s defense by producing antibodies against microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses.
Although tonsils are beneficial to the body, they can cause various problems if they are larger than normal or inflamed. Frequent tonsillitis may cause cardiac rheumatism, kidney inflammation, joint inflammation and growth retardation in children. Overgrown tonsils; it also causes sleep apnea and snoring.
When should tonsil surgery be performed?
If the tonsils are large enough to obstruct the trachea or people who have had tonsillitis too often, it may be necessary to remove the tonsils. Tonsil surgery in children over 4 years or adults can be applied. However, if you have had more than 7 feverish tonsillitis within 1 year, or if tonsil enlargement causes breathing stops during sleep, tonsil surgery can be performed in children under 4 years old.
How is tonsillectomy performed?
Tonsillectomy, tonsil surgery, the patient is fully anesthetized (under general anesthesia) is applied. A method called thermal welding is frequently used in tonsillectomy. The advantage of this method is the removal of tonsils without bleeding. It also has the advantage of not using sutures and less pain in the postoperative period.
