Scratching of the eardrum is a treatment method that is used to discharge the fluid accumulated in the middle ear for various reasons. Scratching of the eardrum for therapeutic purposes is called paracentesis or myringotomy.
Accumulation of fluid in the middle ear is caused by obstruction of the eustachian tube, fever of the middle ear, and incomplete healing of middle ear infections. If the fluid accumulated in the middle ear is not drained, it may cause infection and hearing loss. Therefore, the liquid must be drained here.
Myringotomy is performed under general anesthesia. The eardrum is drawn with a small knife or laser. The liquid in the middle ear is then discharged to the outside by vacuum. This process takes a few minutes, it is a very simple and reliable method. This hole in the eardrum closes automatically in a few days. There may be discharge from the ear for a while after the procedure, which is normal. However, if the incoming liquid is smelly or bloody, the doctor should be informed. If the expected improvement is not achieved after myringotomy, an ear tube may be temporarily inserted into the hole in the eardrum. Generally, myringotomy begins to correct the patient’s complaints immediately after the procedure. The patient does not need to stay in the hospital, a few hours later the patient is sent home.
